The prostate, unique to males, is a fundamental component of the reproductive system, situated directly beneath the bladder and encapsulating the urethra - the conduit for urine to exit the body from the bladder. This gland is instrumental in the production of fluid that accompanies sperm to form semen. The primary function of this fluid is to provide nourishment and safeguard the sperm during its journey through the female reproductive system.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer holds the distinction of being the most prevalent cancer among males, contributing to 30% of all fresh cancer diagnoses and more than 13% of all cancer-related fatalities among men in Australia. The behaviour of prostate cancer exhibits considerable variability, with factors such as age, the degree, volume, and progression of the disease playing significant roles in formulating the optimal treatment regimen. Prostate cancer is commonly identified through the use of screening PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood tests that can be administered by Dr Deanne. Occasionally, it may also be diagnosed due to urinary symptoms or bone discomfort.

During your consultation with Dr Deanne, a comprehensive medical history will be taken, and arrangements will be made for a MRI scan of your prostate to provide additional diagnostic assistance. Verification of a prostate cancer diagnosis is obtained through a transperineal prostate biopsy. This procedure involves gathering tissue samples from the prostate gland for subsequent examination. It is a day procedure conducted under anaesthesia.

Benign Prostate Enlargement

Prostate enlargement, medically referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a prevalent condition that affects men as they age. It involves the growth of the prostate gland to a point where it can exert pressure on the urethra, resulting in difficulties with urination. Symptoms may include frequent urination, particularly at night, and a weakened urine stream. Although it is not linked to prostate cancer, the symptoms it produces can significantly impact one's quality of life.

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a condition characterised by inflammation or swelling of the prostate gland. Symptoms of prostatitis can include difficulty urinating, pain in the pelvic area, and sometimes flu-like symptoms.
