The kidneys are located below the ribcage on either side of the spine. These two bean-shaped organs play a crucial role in the urinary system. Their primary function involves filtering waste products and excess fluids from the bloodstream, which are then eliminated from the body as urine. Moreover, these organs produce hormones that stimulate the creation of red blood cells and help regulate blood pressure.

The kidneys can be effected by various conditions. These include, but are not limited to, kidney cancer, kidney cysts, and kidney stones. Indications of potential kidney issues may comprise of discomfort or pain in the back or side, recurrent urinary infections resistant to short courses of antibiotics, frequent urination, haematuria, or the passage of stones in the urine.

Kidney Conditions

Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer, notably renal cell carcinoma, is characterised by the development of cancerous cells within kidney tissues. The primary treatment method is surgery, the specifics of which depend on the tumour's size and stage, as well as the patient's overall health status.

Kidney Stones

Dr Deanne is has a keen interest in managing multifaceted kidney stones. At our clinic, we are equipped to deliver an extensive range of procedures for the remediation of kidney stones. The most effective treatment is governed by factors such as the stone's size, position, and material composition.

PUJ Obstruction

The Pelvi-Ureteric Junction (PUJ) is a part of the urinary system that connects the kidney to the ureter and bladder. A PUJ obstruction, whether congenital or acquired, can cause pain, stones, infections, and kidney loss. If significant pain or poor kidney function occurs, unblocking may be necessary. Robotic pyeloplasty is the preferred method, where the obstructed segment is removed and a new connection is made between the kidney and ureteric drainage system. Dr Deanne is trained in performing this procedure both robotically and laparoscopically.

Renal Cycts

Renal cysts are commonly identified on scans and are typically inconsequential. Occasionally, cysts may exhibit complex features that necessitate further specialised imaging. In very rare cases, some complex cysts could potentially be cancerous and demand further treatment or ongoing monitoring. Certain cysts may increase in size and cause discomfort, which would require drainage
